Holiday Happenings in Baltimore

There’s good reason why they call this season the most wonderful time of the year! Something about the mesmerising light displays, deliciously decorated cookies, and the wonderful smell of pine trees seems to put everyone into great spirits. However, things can get hectic with buying last minute gifts and party planning that the enjoyment of the season can fall by the waste side. That’s why we have conveniently compiled a list of festive events that are happening this weekend, in Baltimore, that even the Grinch could enjoy.

Christmas Village in Baltimore-
Now through December 24th

This will be the 7th season in a row that this magical event has taken place in West Shore Park. To give you an idea, it’s like a large authentic German Christmas market brought right here to Maryland. A variety of 50 local and international vendors will gather to offer their unique gift items for purchase. They will be located in both a heated festival tent as well as outdoors in traditional wooden booths. More importantly you can enjoy and array of fresh German foods such as Brats, Schnitzel, Raclette cheese and tasty pretzels!

The Feast of Seven Fishes-

This well-known Sicilian tradition has been celebrated by Chef Jerry of Schola for as long as he can remember. This Italian American Christmas Eve dinner is typically a feast-style meal featuring seven or more seafood preparations served in courses. These come in the form of soups, pasta dishes, appetizers, and entrees. To start Jerry will make his grandfather’s specialty; muscles, open face with spicy tomato and parmesan along with whipped salted cod and shrim with sweet onions and red pepper. The meal gets a bit heavier after with linguine in white clam sauce followed by an Italian version of a Maryland traditions, roasted rockfish with crab. Finally, you’ll finish up with some Italian cookies and chocolates.

Being a local, family oriented company in a sea of shady craftsmen can be challenging at times. However, it’s ultimately how True North Remodeling came to fruition. We set out to change the way that homeowners view our industry by implementing best practices and being transparent with not only our customers but staff as well. Integrity is a main component to our foundation at TNR, so it was only right we made a conscious effort to gain our accreditation with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) . What does it mean to be an accredited business with the BBB? Well, first you should first know that the BBB is an over 75 year old organization that became the first of many “Vigilance committees” of Advertising Clubs established to eliminate fraud advertising. As years went by they evolved into what is now a highly respected non-profit corporation dedicated to creating a marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other. The BBB uses an accredited business system to assign rankings to individual businesses, charities, and nonprofit organizations. When a business is accredited by the BBB it means that the BBB has determined that the business meets their accreditation standards which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any customer complaints. They store data about companies and use dispute resolution procedures in order to safeguard both the business and the people they serve. BBB Standards for Trust include: • Establish and maintain a positive track record in the marketplace • Adhere to established standards of advertising and selling • Honestly represent products and services, including clear ad adequate closures of all material • Openly identifying the nature, location, and ownership of the business, and clearly disclose all policies, guarantees and procedures hat bear on a customer’s decision to buy • Abide by all written agreements and verbal representations • Address marketplace disputes quickly, professionally, and in good faith • Protect any data collected against mishandling and fraud, collect personal information only as needed, and respect preferences consumers regarding the use of their information • Approach all business dealings, marketplace transactions and commitments with integrity To us, accreditation with the BBB shows our devotion to putting our best foot forward with every single job that we take on. Their standards hold us accountable and allow for better interactions with every new customer we take on. BBB accreditation coupled with our MHIC license are just two of the many ways we back our business to show consumers that TNR is beyond committed to not only the work we do but also the relationships we cultivate. Myths and misconceptions are a normal part of life. Information is passed from one person to the next and opinions tend to get confused with fact. However, when it comes to your biggest investment you should have a few things set straight. So, here is True North Remodeling’s list of the most common misconceptions you need to get rid of. Myth #1: I can do it myself Truth is, several years of time and experience goes into perfecting a contractor’s craft. You may be convinced that you can do it just as well or perhaps even better than one, but news flash! You can’t. Yes, doing things yourself can sometimes save you money- but it is important to know your limitations prior to starting a job on your own. There are certain projects that are considered low-risk that could be easy to DIY however, just be sure to distinguish which ones those are so that you don’t end up spending more time and money in the long run. All in all, when in doubt- ask for help! Myth #2: Repairs are cheaper than replacement Your homes integrity relies on a lot of different parts and when one goes, the rest will follow if not addressed properly. For instance, you can patch up a roof but when the heavy rain comes water will naturally settle in the next weakest place. This may fix your problem for now but why not just replace it and pay one flat price? Warranties also come in to play in this situation. Whereas most repairs aren’t covered by a warranty, a full roof replacement normally comes with substantial coverage ranging between 10 and 25 years. In other words, do your research because some repairs are a temporary fix that will often cost you more in the long term. Myth #3: Remodeling is inexpensive Home remodeling has been glamorized on TV to make people believe that most projects are fairly inexpensive and quick to complete. Unfortunately, in this industry price can vary substantially between contractors. As a homeowner you do not have the convenience of comparing prices online because most of the time a sales representative has to come out to assess, measure, and provide you with an estimate which doesn’t even take into consideration unforeseen damages. Keep in mind that materials are only a portion of the cost, the skill and labor that goes into completing the project is quite significant as well. The price associated with your project should also factor in project management and all associated things that go along with it. Myth #4: The low bid is the best value In a perfect world, every job you put money towards would turn out precisely as you planned. Unfortunately, not every contractor has your best interest in mind. That is why it is ALWAYS important to check their credibility beforehand. You can do this through word of mouth, reviews, verifying licensing, and selecting companies that are backed by the BBB. Our advice is to get estimates from three contactors of your choosing then go with the one that is middle of the road in price. They are the ones that are going to give you quality products and services that might cost a bit more than the lowest bidder, but will ultimately give you better ROI on your investment. Myth #5: Interior home improvements are better than exterior ones Although it is important to give priority to both the outside and inside of you home, the outside is a buyer’s first impression. If they do not like the appearance of the home or if for any reason it seems un-kept they will less likely be open to even viewing the inside. The outside of a home is also susceptible to the most damage, if something looks worn down or outdated this could put whoever is viewing your home under the impression that they will have to spend more t address those things once settled. Exterior improvements are also pretty standard, it’s hard to go wrong when upgrading to new windows, siding, or roofing. Interior work is also more than likely tailored to how the homeowner utilizes their space and what one homeowner may value in their home, another might not. Is it time to remodel your home? Whether you are just in the information gathering stages or have already started booking estimates we can help! After all, TNR was built on the principle of guiding and finding a solid direction for local homeowners to move in. Our greatest joy comes from the smile produced by our finished product. If you’re a new homeowner, chances are you were a bit shell shocked after receiving your first energy bill. Especially if you moved from an apartment where utilities were included. Or if you upgraded to a bigger home you may have seen a drastic spike in your BGE bill due to heating and cooling a much larger space. Or, maybe your home’s heating a cooling bills have increased due to the age of your home. Either way, it’s never fun to spend excessive money on necessities. Instead, we’re sure you’d like to spend more on things you may want or gifts during the holiday season. We’re here to help and guide you in the right direction when it comes to your home and keeping it insulated properly all year long. The answer lies in your windows and siding. How New Windows Can Reduce Energy Costs If you don’t see an Energy Star label on the product your purchasing, don’t get it! This label is a government-backed stamp of approval that guarantees the products your about to purchase are energy efficient and will save you money. After that you will have to determine what materials your windows are composed of. There are five main types of frames and 2 types of glass thickness to choose from which should be dependent on the location you live. Window Frames: While most people purchase frames for their aesthetic appeal, each one has a very different level of energy efficiency. Vinyl- Vinyl is the most efficient type of frame on the market. They are the most sought after due to price, and lifespan. They are perfect for the average homeowner who’s looking to keep their homes temperature regulated and looking great. Wood- Although wood is a great insulator, there is a lot of upkeep that goes into maintaining this type of window frame on your home. This is especially true if you live in more humid climates where the wood is more susceptible to warping and rot over the years. Wood- Clad- This is for the homeowner who loves the wood look without the hassle or upkeep. Most people will choose vinyl for the exterior for its durability with a wood core for insulation purposes. Again, this is not the best option if you live in a moist, humid climate. Aluminum- This is the most durable against the elements but are not the best when it comes to insulating your home. Although, the type of glass you choose in conjunction with aluminum frames could increase the energy efficiency. Locations that experience frequent hurricanes often utilize this type of frame. Fiberglass- Fiberglass windows are sort of your all in one. They offer superior strength and durability while keeping your homes temperatures where you want them. Fiberglass frames are even more durable then aluminum! Glass: Glass is very dependent on the type of climate you live in. If the area which you live is primarily warm, you’ll want to use a window that has low-e coatings (single pane) to reduce heat gains from your windows. If you live in a primarily cold area, you would want to use a gas filled window (double pane) with e-coating as well to ensure as little heat as possible is escaping your home. Siding: Wood- As stated previously for frames, wood is one of the best insulators. Not to mention, wood is also eco friendly and looks great on a home. This type of siding is also known to hold up fairly well under any weather conditions. However, the maintenance can be pricey due to painting and repairs through the years. If it is also not regularly treated bugs can become a pretty pesky problem. Stucco- For energy efficiency there is no better siding than stucco. It’s thick and keeps the heat out and the cool air in. Areas such as California, Florida, and Mexico have popularized this product. With that being said, stucco is not the most aesthetically pleasing and its brittleness makes it susceptible to strong storms and hail damage. If you are in the wrong climate stucco could end up costing you more in the long run. Vinyl- Vinyl is one of the most popular siding options. This is because it’s both cost effective and energy efficient, especially when combined with the right form of insulation. It is environmentally friendly, durable in the harshest weather, and widely available which makes it very popular among most homeowners. In recent years even more colors and varieties have come out to give homeowners a larger selection. Fiber Cement- Fiber cement siding can mimic the look of wood, stone, or trim which makes it a great choice for enhancing curb appeal of your home without making it difficult to maintain. It is durable for the most part but is still not as weather resistant as vinyl siding. Fiber cement has been known to absorb water which can cause it- and the walls of your home underneath to rot. At True North remodeling we choose to install vinyl windows as well as foam backed insulated vinyl siding for our customers. The material is the most durable, easy to maintain, and will give you the best ROI on your investment! If you’re looking for a way to reduce energy costs in your home this winter, new windows and siding could save you a great deal of money over time. As many of you may or may not know, True North Remodeling was founded by Bruce Pugh and Anthony DeVita, two men on a mission to give back to their people and the community. Throughout our time in business, we have sponsored and participated in several charity events. However, this one hits very close to home. Mid-September, one of our sales representatives Ivan Brown was walking neighborhoods in Gambrills, Maryland when he came upon a home with some roof damage. He walked up to the front door and a woman by the name of Mrs. Delph warmly greeted him. She invited him in, and they sat down to go over different options for her home.

In the world of contracting, most businesses will bite on just about any opportunity to gain yours. This can mean even selling you a promise that is problematic and even in some cases illegal for both parties. And with all the crazy weather that Maryland has had recently, many of you may have experienced damage to your home. If you have homeowner’s insurance this could mean getting the cost of your roof covered at a much lower cost to you which is also where some contractors have found their easy in. How so, you ask? You may have heard strikingly amazing deals where you can get your roof replaced at no cost to you. These roofing contractors are telling homeowners that it is “perfectly legal” to cover their deductible cost on their insurance repairs. Some roofers even go the extra mile to advertise their products as free on yard signs and door hangers. That offer may seem too good to be true, and that’s because it is in fact it is. It’s illegal and here’s why. Homeowners insurance is a binding contract between the homeowner, the insurance company, and the contractor. It outlines the responsibilities of each party should an unexpected incident occur stating specifically that the insurance company is solely responsible for limits, exclusions, and benefits while the homeowner is in fact responsible for the deductible. Homeowners have just as much responsibility should something happen as the insurance provider. This means that when homeowners do not pay their deductibles that it is technically a form of insurance fraud which could result in a loss of coverage and the home. You may be thinking, “Well my friend Susie got hers covered back in ‘08 and her roof was covered complete,” and you may be right. In the past insurance companies would give out lump some payments to homeowners when losses occurred, and the deductible was subtracted from the total sum. For instance, if the adjuster came out and estimated $8,000 in damages and the deductible was $1,000, then they would simply cut the homeowner a check for $7,000. Things are much different today in that insurers include something called a Replacement Cost Value (RCV) provisions into their homeowner’s insurance policies. Which means now, instead of providing a lump sum up front, they will instead disperse payments into separate checks. So, when the insurer goes to subtract the deductible, they also calculate depreciation value and subtract that from the estimate as well. In turn the homeowner receives as smaller check – or series of so when the roofer goes to invoice the homeowner, they may be eligible to recover some of those funds. It really boils down to the cost for the service and the determined value of the roof. All in all, because insurance companies must automatically subtract these costs, a roofing contractor who is promising to pay your deductible is either inflating their prices on your estimate or are cutting corners when it comes to the work they do on your home. When the insurer finds out this is that case, which is more than likely to happen, this is also categorized as fraud and results in significant criminal penalties, ultimately hurting all parties involved. Oh! And just before you start thinking that shopping for a lower price on your roof will save you the expense of your deductible, it won’t. Your deductible always comes first, and the insurance company will subtract that same amount from the cost of the job no matter how big or small the price tag. The bottom line is that there is no escaping it. If you want to protect your family and maintain your investment, then you will pay the $1,000 for something that would ultimately cost you much more had you night filed the claim in the first place. At TNR we pride ourselves in being transparent and doing things the right way. We do our research to make sure that we are not putting ourselves or our customers in jeopardy.
